The 2017 report by CSIRO and Energy Enteworks Australia, Electricity Network Transformation Roadmap highlights that energy transformation - where consumers move to generate their own electricity - is occuring "on an unprecedented scale" and predicts that up to 45% of consumers will generate heir own electricity by 2050.
While this transformation is occuring rapidly on the East Coast and on larger networks in WA, the Kimberley Development Commission has reported that "the Kimberley appears to be lagging behind the installation rates of renewable being experienced across the rest of Australia". This is despite the Kimberley having significant energy resources coupled with higher energy use in the region due to significant cooling and air conditioning loads.
ETAK was inspired to form following the "Energise the Kimberley" conference in Broome where Senator Dean Smith invited attendees to bring "a common voice" to the government.
While there may always be contentious issues we believe that it is important for local Kimberley people with local knowledge and experience to come together to work through the challenges and opportunities that the energy transformation presents
